Rutland Sea Dragon Talk In Harlaxton
The October meeting of The Harlaxton History Society, at 7pm on Wednesday 11 October, will reach back 180 million years as it focusses on the discovery of the UK’s largest ever fossilised Ichthyosaur, found at Rutland Water in 2021.
The meeting, which is open to the public, will hear from Joe Davis, who discovered the 10 metre long ancient sea predator that has been dubbed “The Rutland Sea Dragon” in what has been called "one of the greatest finds in British palaeontological history".
Mr Davis, who works at the Rutland Water Nature Reserve had been undertaking landscaping work at the reserve's reservoir in February 2021 when he spotted something odd poking out of the mud. It turned out to be the remains of a type of warm-blooded, air-breathing sea predator not unlike dolphins, that could grow up to 25 metres long.
